Purple Class

Topic: Signs of Spring / Ready, Steady, Grow

Communication, reading and writing

This term, your child will explore winter and spring through fun, sensory experiences. They will enjoy stories like Can’t Sleep, Little Bear and The Hungry Caterpillar, with activities that encourage them to respond through gestures, vocalisations, or eye contact. We’ll also use sounds, textures, and visuals, such as feeling “snow,” hearing the wind, or spotting flowers, to build their communication skills in a way that’s engaging and interactive.

Cognition

Your child will explore cause-and-effect through simple, hands-on activities. They’ll press buttons to see lights or hear sounds, pour water to melt ice, or stack blocks and watch them fall. These activities are designed to spark curiosity, develop problem-solving skills, and help them anticipate what happens next. We’ll also use puzzles and matching games with shapes, colours, and textures linked to the changing seasons to support their learning.

Physical Development

This term’s activities will help your child strengthen their movement skills in a fun way. They’ll play games like “stop and go” with sounds or whistles, throw soft “snowballs,” and join in with parachute play. Fine motor skills will be developed through activities like scooping, pouring, and mark-making in sensory materials like paint or shaving foam.

Independence and Life Skills

Your child will have opportunities to practice useful life skills. Activities like scooping ice, making simple snacks (like flower-shaped sandwiches), and exploring weather routines using pictures and symbols will help them learn to make choices and build independence in their daily routines.

 PSHE/RSHE

This term, we’ll focus on helping your child develop social skills like turn-taking and sharing. They’ll join in group games, like passing sensory objects (e.g., snow globes), and simple action songs. We’ll also help them explore emotions by using visual aids and seasonal themes, such as feeling calm on a rainy day or happy like a snowman.

My World

Your child will explore their surroundings as winter turns to spring. They’ll have fun with sensory materials like ice and flowers, match symbols or pictures to the weather, and take part in nature-based activities like bird watching and planting seeds. These experiences will help them connect with the world around them.

Arts and Music

Your child will get creative with winter and spring-themed projects, such as painting with ice, making flower collages, and printing with leaves. In music sessions, they’ll explore rhythms and beats with instruments like bells and shakers, joining in seasonal songs and patterns that are both fun and sensory-rich.

ICT/Computing

Your child will develop their understanding of cause-and-effect by using interactive apps and devices. They’ll use switches to make sounds or animations happen, create simple digital art, and explore apps that respond to their touch or movement. These activities are designed to encourage intentional actions and build their anticipation.
