Post 16 - The Key

Autumn Term Overview

Towards Employment

We will be further developing our English and Maths skills to help us further our skills for employment. We will be identifying word classes, sentence types and consolidating our comprehension and reading skills using the Fresh Start programme. In Maths, we will be focusing on numbers, place value and money to support us when out in the community. We will be doing a range of work experience activities including working in classes at Heatherwood school and working in the school cafes.

Independent living

We will be further developing our skills to become more independent adults. We will be running a café, using our customer service and cooking meals for pupils and adults within school. On Fridays, we will be attending Harmony House. Here we will be learning life skills such as using a washing machine, making beds and cooking healthy meals at home, preparing us for independent living in adulthood.

Community Inclusion

We will be doing weekly travel training learning to develop our community skills. We will be learning how to use our own money to buy food and drink at a local pub and bakery while also identifying safe and unsafe strangers to trust and talk to in case we need help when out in the community. We will be using public transport including buses and trains to visit a range of local areas. Some pupils will be participating in Duke of Edinburgh where they will be learning a range of life skills.

Health

We will be further developing our skills to manage and regulate our own emotions and feelings. We will be learning about Emotional Literacy and using the drama circle to understand how our peers and adults feel in certain scenarios. We will be learning how to work as a team and with a partner to support our own learning and skills. Some pupils will be participating in Forest school where they will be enjoying the outdoors and the positives of nature on their mental wellbeing.

Extended and Enriched

Our options this term are drama, art, forest schools, PE and Duke of Edinburgh. We will also be running a café or completing gardening as part of our work experience once per week. Pupils have chosen which of the above they wish to take part in and access these in groups every Friday.

We will also be reading for pleasure multiple times a week as a whole group.

Careers

In careers, we will be working with Sarah, our careers advisor to think about our skills and qualities. We will complete work experience and think about jobs in our community
